If Your Common-Carrier Shipment is Damaged

Known damage (the shipment is visibly damaged)

1.        Have the carrier note the nature and extent of the damage on both the carrier's copy and delivery copy of the freight bill.

2.        Leave the damaged material in the original shipping container. This is essential!

3.        Contact the carrier immediately for an inspection of the goods. Get a copy of the inspection report to support your claim.

4.        File the claim as quickly as possible, even if you have to estimate the dollar amount of the damage. Claims must be filed within nine (9) months of the shipping date. NOTE: Claims on air shipments must also be filed within nine (9) months.

Concealed damage

1.        Call the carrier immediately after discovering the concealed damage; request that an inspection be made.

2.        Leave the damaged material in the original shipping container. This is essential!

3.        File the claim as quickly as possible, along with a copy of the carrier's inspection report. Claims must be filed within nine (9) months of the shipping date.
