If Your
Common-Carrier Shipment is Damaged
Known damage (the shipment is visibly
damaged)
1. Have the carrier note the nature
and extent of the damage on both the carrier's copy and delivery copy of the
freight bill.
2. Leave the damaged material in the
original shipping container. This is essential!
3. Contact the carrier immediately
for an inspection of the goods. Get a copy of the inspection report to
support your claim.
4. File the claim as quickly as
possible, even if you have to estimate the dollar amount of the damage.
Claims must be filed within nine (9) months of the shipping date. NOTE:
Claims on air shipments must also be filed within nine (9) months.
Concealed damage
1. Call the carrier immediately
after discovering the concealed damage; request that an inspection be made.
2. Leave the damaged material in the
original shipping container. This is essential!
3. File the claim as quickly as
possible, along with a copy of the carrier's inspection report. Claims must
be filed within nine (9) months of the shipping date.
